Indigo Twilight
Oil by on Linen on Panel 12 x 24
Just south of Yuba, which is not much more than a crossroads on State Route 31 between Acme and Elk Rapids, lies a reclaimed natural area on a ridge that overlooks East Grand Traverse Bay. On my pretty much nightly excursions from my house to Sayler Park, which is in Yuba, I would pass it and always wonder what it was like. Finally one evening, after a long walk with my Aussie on the beach at Sayler Park, and absent anything resembling a sunset due to a storm building out over Lake Michigan, I pulled in long enough to look around and take a few images on my iPhone. A few small trees obscured the view of East Bay in places, but they also created full, rich silhouettes in the coming darkness. “Indigo Twilight” is drawn from one of the images I took that evening. As I am currently in an experimental phase, I wanted to try some techniques in the sky, trees and land and feel as though I learned some things in the process, as well as produced a painting that, at very least, provides a strong composition.
